Too many Shopify apps? Find the ones killing speed and conversions

Slow store, drifting conversions? App bloat is often the cause — how to find the Shopify apps taxing your speed, and what to remove.

Shopify’s app ecosystem is a strength and a trap. Every app you install injects scripts, and past a certain point those scripts quietly tax the two things that matter most: page speed and conversion rate. If your store feels slower than it should and conversions have drifted down, app bloat is one of the first places to look.

How apps hurt performance

Most apps add JavaScript and CSS to every page, whether or not that page uses the app. A reviews widget loads on your checkout; an upsell app loads on your blog. Stack a dozen of these and the browser spends its time downloading, parsing and running code instead of showing the customer your store. Worse, one app’s script can conflict with another’s and break the cart or checkout on certain devices.

How to find the offenders

Don’t guess by app name. Measure. Look at what actually loads on your key pages — home, product, cart and checkout — and identify which scripts are heaviest and which run where they aren’t needed. Cross-reference against apps you no longer use or that duplicate a feature. The goal is a short list of apps to remove, replace or restrict to the pages that need them.

What “good” looks like

A lean Shopify store loads its critical content fast, defers non-essential scripts, and runs each app only where it earns its place. Core Web Vitals are a useful target: Largest Contentful Paint under 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint under 200 milliseconds. Hitting those usually means conversions recover alongside speed.

How we approach it

We audit exactly what each page loads, identify the apps dragging speed and conversions, and give you a prioritised list of what to remove, replace or scope — verified against real customer journeys, not a synthetic score. No passwords are needed to start.

Frequently asked questions

How many Shopify apps is too many?

There’s no fixed number — what matters is how much code each app loads and where. Ten well-behaved apps can be fine; three heavy ones loading on every page can be a problem. Measure impact, not count.

Will removing apps hurt my store?

Only if you remove something you rely on. The safe approach is to identify duplicates and unused apps first, test changes on the key journeys, and replace essential functionality with a lighter option where needed.

Can app bloat really lower conversions?

Yes. Slower pages and script conflicts on the cart or checkout directly reduce completed orders — and because the store still works for most visitors, it rarely shows up clearly in your dashboards.
